Dune Gardens (Duintuinen) — the park starts at the front door.

Thousands of gardens along the dune edge become part of the national park: de-paved, native, pesticide-free. Dune biodiversity moves outward, the neighbourhood cools, and the drinking-water aquifer stays clean.

Why this project.

Thousands of private gardens sit against one of the richest nature areas in the Netherlands. Together they cover more ground than the reserve beside them, and most of that ground is paved.

The project turns those gardens into an extension of the dunes: paving comes up, native planting goes in, and pesticides go out. Each garden is small. The number of them is what makes it a landscape.

Residents give to the project in their own region, and every euro is doubled by YOUR.earth and its nature-conservation partners before it is deployed.

The dune, pulled outward

Gardens together form one connected habitat for insects and birds, far beyond the park itself.

Less stone, more sponge

De-paved gardens absorb peak rainfall, cool the neighbourhood and relieve the sewer.

Protection at the source

Pesticide-free gardening protects the groundwater PWN turns into drinking water.

How we resotred nature

Plant

Co-financing the native "Wild & Inheems" range and resident subsidies.

De-pave

Tile-swap drives in priority neighbourhoods, garden by garden, street by street.

Demonstrate

Demonstration gardens and activation campaigns led by IVN.

Guide

Practical help for residents through jouwduintuin.nl.

Connect

Schools, employees and local businesses join as participant and co-funder.

Five parties with the same interest.

Van Baarsen Buisleidingen

Client · Investor

A family firm of 300 tradespeople, 70 years in underground pipe infrastructure. Level 5 on the CO₂ Performance Ladder and main contractor on the PWN contract.

CO₂ reduction is now the norm. Tenders will be won on demonstrable nature gain — and Van Baarsen intends to be the reference case.

PWN

Host · Beneficiary

Drinking-water utility for North Holland and manager of the dune reserves. In the dunes both roles meet: the landscape that carries biodiversity also filters the water.

Nature gain goes to the heart of PWN's own mission. A contractor who strengthens the dune is a partner in it, not a supplier.

Nationaal Park Zuid-Kennemerland

Lead partner · Initiator

Dune landscape on the North Holland coast, and the originator of Duintuinen: the idea that a garden can become a piece of national park.

Biodiversity does not stop at the park boundary. The greener the ring around it, the more robust the dune — but the initiative ran on annual grants.

IVN Natuureducatie

Lead partner · Activation & education

Nature-education organisation with local chapters, volunteers and years of experience in neighbourhood campaigns and school programmes.

A garden does not change because of a leaflet. It changes because of a neighbour who went first — and IVN delivers exactly that.

YOUR.earth

Programme owner · Fund · Verification

Part of the Regenerate the Economy group and owner of YE-STD-01. Runs the Nature-Positive Fund, fixes the baseline and measures the gain.

Without a yardstick, nature-positive is a marketing term. From 27 September 2026, EU directive 2024/825 restricts unfounded green claims. Measured, not promised.

What we measure, and how we prove it.
